Transexual Penguins?
Well, it’s always been a question that has intrigued biologists and sociologists alike. What makes people gay or bisexual, and is it unique to humans?
It appears that at least part of the question has finally been answered. Scientists have found bisexual relationships in numerous other species, reports Scientific American. Apparently there are reports of over 1500 species engaging in homosexual acts, though none of them appear to be strictly gay relationships – rather it seems that animals just have sex with whoever is available.
Maybe this means I’m not so strange in considering myself pansexual after all. I just have sex with whoever or whatever is available! Scientists report that male animals in situations where there is a lack of females are likely to couple with eachother. And subordinate males and females of several species will offer sexual acts to the dominant same-sex individual in their group in exchange for protection. I always knew there was a biological explanation for this
It’s a great article if you’re scientifically inclined (with the awesome title of “Bisexual Species: Unorthodox Sex in the Animal Kingdom” to boot!). If not, there’s still something about gay penguins cuddling that just makes me feel good
